Las Calles Públicas
In this series of works from 2015-2021, I used a dérive-style process in Puebla, Mx., Mexico City, New York, and LA to contrast my identity as an American tourist and American citizen with people in different cultures who [actively or passively] resist controls of public streets and spaces that emanate from American-style policies whose outcomes privilege tourists, property, and business owners over other street users. Self-documentation in the work initiates an interrogation of privilege and American-ness through negation and/or return of the gaze and intentional ambiguity in mapping processes that reference challenges to spatial authority.
Artworks included drawings, map paintings, photographs and video of street actions and street actors, political tshirts distributed for wear in the streets, and performances.
