Drawings/Works on Paper
I have been making a variety of paper-based works that consider the meticulous and/or collaborative nature of community development. The line drawings are of large-scale civic projects not yet finished when I began the drawing; another project I'm working on is a promotional postcard campaign for Greensburg, Ks., the town destroyed by a tornado in 2007 that is rebuilding as the first 100% LEED-platinum-sustainable community in the U.S.

I think the tone of these works is intentionally neutral. There is a bit of satire in play when making works about places like San Francisco and New York City, because they are the places of desire that we romanticize in the extreme. What can communties do? What is utopic, what is realistic? I enjoy channeling classic modern texts and ideas to play off of in these simultaneously real and hypothetical questions.
